Chair

dana.jpg

Dana Williams

Hi, my name is Dana Williams, and I am running to be the next Holdsworth Chair.

I would like the opportunity of being the chair of The Holdsworth Club so that I can lead the club’s continued growth and give back to a society that has supported me throughout my university experience.

WHY ME?
- My year on the committee as the Sports Officer has familiarised me with the
running of the Club and has given me a clear understanding of how to act as
the chair.
- I have 3 years experience in a management role which has given me strong
insight into successfully leading a team.

GOALS:
- Smoothly integrate new roles into the committee so that the club can provide
more experiences to its members.
- Strengthen the Club’s focus on legal employability, by hosting events that aim
to improve members’ confidence in this area.
- Broaden our sponsorships to provide members with new experiences and
greater exposure to the legal industry.
- Continue delivering successful events hosted by The Holdsworth Club, with
an added commitment to making them more inclusive and accessible.
- Introduce more opportunities for members to express their views, so that they
can get the most out of their membership.
- Continue expanding our sports teams alongside the next Sports Officer, giving
members even more opportunities to meet new people whilst playing the
sports they love.
- Work alongside the Vice-Chair and the rest of the committee to build on this
year’s success.

Vice-Chair

scarlet.jpg

Scarlet Dillon

My name is Scarlet, and I’m running for Vice Chair this year.

After previously acting on the Holdsworth committee as publicity officer for a year, I developed a strong understanding of how the society operates and its importance for students. I first hand witnessed how the societies academic events and sporting opportunities were able to positively contribute to students’ wellbeing, whether that be supporting them in career ambitions or developing a social network. It is for this reason that I have applied for vice-chair as I want to have a leading role in expanding the opportunities available to members and ensuring the society continues to grow in an inclusive way. My prior experience on the committee allowed me to work closely with different roles, giving me a strong understanding of how to coordinate meetings, maintain clear communication, and ensure that events run effectively.

My aim for next year would be to secure more sponsorships from organisations offering alternative legal career options. Last year, the committee had sponsorship from over fourteen law firms, all of which supported our academic events and provided valuable opportunities for members interested in solicitor and barrister career pathways. I am committed to broadening the society’s reach, partnering with employers regarding non-traditional legal roles such as policy, public sector based legal careers. This will give members an opportunity to attend events and hear from employers that reflect the full range of careers available within the legal sector, helping them explore pathways that align with their interests.

Secretary

finlay.PNG

Finlay Cunnison

My name is Finlay Cunnison, a second year Law with Business undergraduate and a current member of Holdsworth Hockey Club. I understand the role of Secretary to be integral to the daily success of the Holdsworth Club and I am excited by the prospect of contributing to this. Having attended multiple Holdsworth events, I have seen firsthand the benefits this club offers; its contribution undoubtedly led to a vacation scheme offer in my second year of study. Representing Clyde & Co on campus last year taught me the importance of effective communication, a skill I would bring to writing your weekly newsletter and ensuring effective outcomes from regular committee meetings. This role also benefitted my time management which makes me well suited for a role requiring a strong weekly commitment. Instead of offering you a novel idea that has the potential to disrupt the operation of the society, my promise stands in the commitment to prompt turnarounds for member enquiries and a digestible weekly newsletter that highlights key dates and important notices. My goal for this position entails maintaining the seamless running of the Holdsworth Club. Being an active participant in the Hockey Club, I am accessible to respond to questions of any nature. I would be honoured to serve as your Secretary and am highly motivated to maintain the high standards of this society. Good luck with your exams and I look forward to seeing you at society events and on campus.

Treasurer

lauren white.jpg

Lauren White

I am applying for the role of treasurer as I want to gain firsthand experience into a position of significant responsibility that requires attention to detail, strong time management and organisational skills. I believe it is a great opportunity to strengthen my financial skills, having already begun to develop them through several commercial hospitality positions. I want to ensure that all financial decisions meet the regulatory and ethical standards and I am assured in my ability to do so for any given deadline.

If I were to be elected, I would continue to maintain careful control of the income, ensuring each activity receives the correct allocations. I am confident that I can produce accurate financial accounts and invoices, whilst maintaining strong and consistent communication with other committee members, as well as external sponsors, to ensure clarity at every stage. I intend to maintain a clear and transparent budget sheet that is regularly updated to provide accessible and accurate information on where the club’s finances stand to be shared when required. This would make understanding the finances easier for all committee members and ensure that it is efficient and accessible when allocating the budget to different areas.

Overall, I am confident in my ability to manage and oversee the annual budget and maintain vigilant control to guarantee the success of the club’s activities. With diligent tracking, efficiency, and strong communication with all parties, it is a responsibility I am certain that I will execute with the required organisation and attention necessary.

mackenzie burns.jpg

Mackenzie Burns

I am applying for the role of Treasurer of the Holdsworth Club because I am keen to contribute to a society that has already played a significant role in my university experience. Having attended numerous Holdsworth events and being actively involved in Holdsworth Netball, I have seen firsthand the value it brings to its members. I would welcome the opportunity to support its continued success from a financial and organisational perspective.

I believe I am well-suited to the role due to my strong numerical and financial skills. I studied maths at A-Level and have worked as a self-employed maths tutor for the past five years. Managing my own tutoring business has given me practical experience in handling invoices, tracking income and expenditure and maintaining accurate financial records. These skills have developed my attention to detail, organisation and accountability- qualities essential for an effective treasurer.

If elected, my priority would be to ensure transparency, efficiency and responsible budgeting across all society activities. I would work closely with the committee to allocate funds effectively, ensuring that events remain accessible while maintaining financial stability. I also understand the responsibility of acting as a signatory for a registered charity, and I would ensure that all financial decisions are made in line with regulatory and ethical standards, maintaining the integrity and trust of the society.

Overall, I am enthusiastic about giving back to the Holdsworth Club community and helping to ensure it continues to thrive in the coming year.

chloe siddons.png

Chloe Siddons

I’m running for Treasurer because, as an active member, I genuinely care about Holdsworth and want to help benefit every individual involved. Beginning as a part of the netball team and moving to play for the hockey team has made me an involved, passionate member of Holdsworth. Events such as the Manchester Inter-Law Tournament have shown me how important it is to have a strong, organized committee behind the scenes. I want to bring that same energy, organization, and reliability into being the Treasurer.

I’m someone who values structure, organization, and planning, and I am always in control of my own personal finances. Hence, I believe I could translate this into working under Holdsworth. If elected, I’ll make sure our budgeting is clear, easy to understand, and focused on giving members the best value for their money whilst providing them with as many opportunities as possible. Whether it’s networking opportunities, training, competitions, or social events.

I also want to maintain our sponsorship opportunities with Latham & Watkins to lower certain costs and give students access to more events. As someone who is a member of societies alongside balancing sport, and studies, I’m used to performing well under pressure and remaining organized. Ultimately, I want to help create an inclusive, successful, and well-supported Holdsworth Society. I would be honored to be your Treasurer and contribute to such a successful, inclusive society.

Solicitor Careers Officer

amelia.jpeg

 Amelia Jones

During my first year as a law student, it has become clear how overwhelming the pathway to becoming a solicitor can feel. From securing insight and vacation schemes to developing networking skills, the process can feel complex and intimidating. Having experienced this myself, if elected Solicitor Careers Officer, I will ensure students receive the necessary support and guidance to pursue the solicitor pathway. My focus will be on three key areas: careers guidance, building connections and application support.

Firstly, I will develop the guidance already provided by the Holdsworth Club regarding the solicitor pathway. While many students aspire to become solicitors, the steps involved are often unclear. I would organise interactive workshops on key areas including the SQE, interviews, and assessment centres so students gain the knowledge and clarity to approach applications with confidence.

Furthermore, I would introduce ‘Day in the Life of a Solicitor’ events, inviting practising solicitors to discuss their daily work, their practice area, and qualities of strong candidates. These events would give students valuable insight into different legal practice areas whilst allowing them to ask questions.

Secondly, I would launch a law firm insight series highlighting a specific firm and its trainees or solicitors weekly through newsletters or social media. This would provide practical advice and realistic insights.

Finally, I would create a Holdsworth Club Careers Resource Hub containing application deadlines, CV examples and interview tips, providing informative and accessible guidance.

Ultimately, my goal is simple: clear guidance, real opportunities and achievable success for aspiring solicitors.

william nelson.jpg

William Nelson

I’m a second-year student studying International Law, some of my career highlights so far have been attending a variety of insight days including Milbank, Clifford Chance and Jones Day and I will be joining Barclays legal insight programme this summer. I’ve been able to build connection with a variety of law firms through networking as well as my role as a multi-employer brand ambassador. Having been able to attend a wide variety of careers events, both hosted by the Holdsworth club and others, I’ve been able to see what works and what doesn’t. What inspires a room to take accelerate their legal career and what leaves people demotivated. I’ve seen what engages people and what feels like just another law event. By becoming the next Solicitor Career officer, I want to increase the amount of interactive skills-based events such as negotiation and commercial awareness competitions. With these events delivering the best value to aspiring solicitors who want to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and ability directly to firms before they reach assessment centres and vacation schemes. I also look continue the work of the incumbent careers officer in increasing the diversity of opportunities provided; offering opportunities with large London and US firms as well as local regional firms. I will look to utilise firm connections and the alumni network for students preparing for vacation scheme / training contracts and first year scheme applications to ask specific tailored questions to the most relevant peoples possible; alongside regular drop-in sessions and Q&As.

Alternative Careers & Commercial Awareness Officer

mary mckay.jpg

Mary McKay

Being a member of the Holdsworth club for my time at university has been extremely enjoyable, and becoming an official representative of the team would give me an opportunity to give back. My prior commitment to the Holdsworth Club such as attending Holdsworth Netball and The Holdsworth Family Mentoring Scheme in my first year, has given me some insight into the society. My external commitments to societies such as Cool Runnings and Girls Run Brum - has given me the opportunity to speak to individuals seeking many different career paths. Exploring alternative careers will allow me to broaden my knowledge and education on potential careers after university and educate others accordingly.

From my experiences of Pro Bono and attendance to CEPLER I have gained network experience with multiple industries and companies, which I will endeavour to utilise in my role as Alternative Careers and Commercial Awareness Officer.

In my position in this role, l aim to organise a 'Careers Fair' to create a social environment for discovering alternative vocations to law. Additionally, from having connections with alumni students, I will organise talks allowing the opportunity for students to hear from individuals who are now actively seeking and partaking in careers since their university degree. I aim to bring a productive approach to the role and support any concerns anyone has. Many thanks, Mary J

Milcah Bukasa

I am running for Alternative Careers & Commercial Awareness Officer because I recognize that a law degree is not a singular pathway but a foundation with real potential across industries.

My experience reflects this. As the co-founder of a business, I have worked at the intersection of law and business operations. Alongside my academic work in comparative legal systems and my involvement in an anti-human trafficking NGO, I have developed a perspective beyond the conventional solicitor–barrister trajectory. I understand where a law degree can take you and how varied those paths can be.

To me, this role is about awareness. Many students know alternative careers exist, but far fewer know how to navigate them. I will prioritize bringing in professionals from consulting, finance, media, and beyond. To demonstrate the versatility of law degrees.

Commercial awareness should not feel daunting. I will ensure students can develop this skill in a way that is fun, accessible, and genuinely useful. I aim to create an environment where building commercial awareness feels both empowering and practical.

I will deliver "Law Beyond the Bar”- a focused speaker series; Cross-Sector Networking Evenings; and “The Commercial Awareness Game Night” - a fast-paced, team-based challenge tackling business and legal scenarios, competing to analyze and pitch solutions under pressure.

With experience organizing panels and symposiums, leading teams, and working with external partners, I am committed to delivering initiatives that are both engaging and impactful.

A law degree opens doors! I will ensure you know which ones and how to walk through them.

Thank you for this opportunity!

Barrister Careers Officer

marina.jpg

Marina Georgieva

As an aspiring Criminal Barrister, I believe that my application this role would encourage more opportunities and events for future barristers looking for experience. To gain experience as an aspiring barrister is extremely difficult and competitive, which is why I would like to introduce weekly events/ workshops that benefit those who are interested in this filed. My aim is to introduce session that talk about the process of applying for the bar, how to create a successful application, speakers who talk about their experience as a barrister, different pathways to becoming a barrister, mock interviews for those looking to secure a mini pupillage and the different areas of law that barristers practice in. Additionally, I would also like to host networking events where students gain the opportunity to talk with different firms and barristers. Alongside this I believe that there should be
an annual ‘Future barristers’ event which would be open all students interested or wanting to pursue this career in the future where they can be celebrated for their successes throughout the year.

I am a committed individual who will work alongside students to bridge the gap between university and external legal institutions to create a useful environment where students can gain experience and connections! I have previously had experience in gaining a mini pupillage with barristers and know that to gain experience in this field is difficult but possible.

I look forward to meeting the future generation of barristers at the University of Birmingham!

Mooting and Advocacy Officer

bella eaton.jpg

Bella Eaton

Advocacy is at the heart of why I came to study law, and it is central to the career I am working towards as a future barrister. This year, I have actively sought every opportunity to develop those skills, and I am proud to say that my team won this years CEPLER debating competition. These experiences have shown me how transformative advocacy can be - not only in building confidence, but in empowering students who may not always see themselves represented in traditional legal spaces.

If elected as Mooting & Advocacy Officer, my goal is to make advocacy accessible, ambitious, and inclusive. I want to expand opportunities for students at every level, whether they are stepping into their first debate or preparing for external competitions. I will coordinate structured skill‑building workshops, focusing on practical techniques such as case analysis, courtroom etiquette, and persuasive oral advocacy. A key priority for me is strengthening advocacy pathways for underrepresented groups, particularly women in law. I plan to collaborate with relevant networks to deliver targeted sessions that address the unique challenges faced in advocacy‑driven careers, ensuring that Holdsworth actively supports those who need it most.

Finally, I aim to build a stronger competitive culture by increasing internal opportunities, offering constructive feedback, and preparing teams to excel beyond BLS. I am committed, organised, and passionate about elevating the advocacy culture within Holdsworth. With your support, I will work to ensure every student has the tools and confidence to find their voice.

Academic Officer

Jonathan Arnold.jpg

Jonathan Arnold

If elected to the role, I will pursue the following 2 reforms:

Firstly, from being a contract law tutor in the past year, the main issue is the lack of attendance (ranging from 0-5).  I would increase visibility through lecture announcements and having a visible schedule of sessions for each term, so students can plan ahead. I would also collate the revision documents as a revision resource, potentially introducing recordings of sessions, to serve as a revision resource for members.

Secondly, from my experience with the family scheme, I have noted how interests of mentees and mentors rarely align particularly with differences in wanting to become a solicitor, barrister or an alternate career as well as careers outside of the UK. To remedy this, I would include an option for members to specify their career preference and potentially any practice areas they are considering to match groups accordingly.

My relevant experience which proves my suitability for the role is as follows:

  • I ran weekly debating sessions as the public debate training officer of the UoB debating society, so I can use this experience to run weekly tutoring sessions effectively and efficiently.

  • I organised a public speaking competition including creating judging criteria and motions as well as taking on feedback throughout the process. This will help me organise events such as the module selection fair and to act on feedback I would gather.

  • I can use my experience as a contract tutor to provide support to those new in the role.

Rhianne Jopson

Clear support. Real results.

Top Priorities

  1. Create a central hub for revision resources

Why I am applying:

• Academic support should not depend on who you know

• Guidance often arrives late or lacks clarity

• Students need support that is easy to access and easy to use

• I want to help students convert knowledge into marks

What I will deliver:

• I will run weekly drop-in sessions before exams

• Practical academic support

• Each session will focus on essays or problem questions

• Create a bank of revision resources for each module

• Invite speakers that promote academic and inclusive opportunities

Clear assessment guidance:

• I will provide simple frameworks for essays

I am running as Academic Officer, as for all of us within the degree, how well we perform within our marks is a dealbreaker, and often, whether we want to admit it or not, it is one of our biggest priorities. In the end, how well we as students perform, do not translate into how well our future prospects could turn into, but at the same time, it measures how well we as students could apply the law, understand the implications, and know the structure, as to why things are the way they are. The reason why I wanted to run for academic officer, came even a bit more personally to how I navigated my studies within the previous year, I myself at various times despite being very ambitious as far as how I wanted to go ahead, and make sure I study enough, and alot to get good marks, I found that certain methods I had endured were not affective, therefore I had to go through various trial, and error, to ensure that I was able to sufficiently, and properly study, to address gaps I endured from my old methods. Building upon, what I faced through in my first year, I believe that as academic officer I can serve as a role to assist, help, and ensure that I could provide adequate tutoring session events, where I myself going into a second year could collaborate with those studying alongside me, but also those who had been in my position who will be in their first year. Within learning, I realized that the most sufficient way to approach modules are active recall, depth, and reasoning to apply understanding rather than vague knowledge. Furthermore, as an international student, I had to go through many different life changes, and adjustments from living in a new place to studying, given the drastic events I faced, I believe I could use my anecdotal experience, to provide academic guidance, but also general emotional and mental support for those in their first year.

trescha.jpeg

Trescha Poulton

My name is Trescha Poulton and I am a second-year LLB Law student. Academic Officer appeals to me because I love helping younger students succeed, knowing exactly how it feels to be in their position. I am actively involved in many roles which do exactly this, such as being a second-year mentor, a student representative and a mentor for sixth-form students applying to university. I realised how much I enjoy making a difference to the lives of students and advising based off personal experiences. A sixth-form student reached out to me on LinkedIn asking about how I have found studying law at UOB and it felt amazing to reflect on my own journey and share it in hopes to guide or prepare them for university.

With this relevant experience, I believe it makes me a perfect fit for the role. It would bring me great pride to directly be involved in Holdsworth, facilitating students' understanding of the course. I gained a lot from the module selection event and would love the opportunity to host the same event next year. I even suggested to the BLS faculty to implement a similar event next year for future students. Furthermore, organising and delivering the 'family scheme' would be an amazing chance to continue the guidance I am currently providing to first-year students through mentoring.

I feel as though I could make a real difference for students through the role of Academic Officer and I know I would give my all to the role.

Diversity, Welfare and Engagement Officer

mia 2.png

Mia Stevens

Hi, I’m Mia Stevens, I’m a second year LLB Law student and a member of the Holdsworth Club.

I’m applying to be the next Diversity, Welfare and Engagement (DW&I) Officer for the Holdsworth Club, which includes acting as a point of contact for all students and helping to facilitate welfare events in order to continue to develop a safe, supportive and academic environment.

I’m inspired to continue the excellence of the current DW&I officers, such as designing and distributing merchandise and planning and representing the Holdsworth club at events.

I’m keen to utilise my communication and teamwork skills that I’ve developed in my role as a student volunteer for Birmingham’s FLAG clinic this year, and give back to the Holdsworth Club by also drawing on my experiences as an academic mentor, tutor and mental health first aider when stepping into this role.

My plans for the forthcoming year include facilitating events for the Holdsworth Club with women in law, for instance hosting panels with female legal professionals sharing insights into their career. I also aim to bring back Holdsworth alumni for networking opportunities and post university talks, including careers advice, in order to strengthen connections between current members and alumni. A final ambition of mine is to create free Holdsworth Club memberships as prizes available through raffles and competitions to increase participation in, and improve the accessibility of the Holdsworth Club.

Thank you

neve gibbs.jpg

Neve Gibbs

Hi, I’m Neve Gibbs, a first-year law student running for the role of Diversity, Welfare and Engagement Officer. I believe I am well suited to this position due to my ongoing experience volunteering at a children’s contact centre where I have nurtured the ability to create a safe, supportive and consistent environment for individuals. This role has strengthened my empathy and emotional intelligence. These qualities are important as they can be incredibly grounding and I would bring them to supporting members of the society.

If elected, I will build upon the previous committee’s work by continuing to promote accessibility and inclusivity, through review of inclusive events, accessible feedback options and ongoing member support. My aim is to ensure all members feel welcome regardless of their background or confidence level.

Through my wish to encourage a wider range of members to engage in Holdsworth’s socials, that I have enjoyed attending this past year, I will work to ensure that those events, alongside other wider experiences within the society, cater to a variety of student’s differing preferences by gathering input through both surveys and informal conversations. By providing this opportunity for voices to be heard, I will actively listen and ensure that the society members signed up for remains supportive and enjoyable for everyone.

Throughout the year, I will be an approachable and confidential contact for members to reach out to, offering support and, where necessary, mediating any difficulties experienced to help maintain a positive and respectful environment within the society.

Social Events Manager

ffion.jpg

Ffion Evans

I’m applying for this role because I genuinely enjoy planning and organising events. I am organised, reliable, and dedicated when I take something on. I like making sure things run smoothly and that people actually enjoy the experience.

A good example of this is when I helped organise my school prom for over 100 students. I worked with two others, but when one withdrew shortly before the event, I had to take on additional responsibility under significant time pressure. This included reorganising key elements such as collecting and managing all catering orders the day before the prom, ensuring dietary requirements were met. Despite last-minute challenges, I helped coordinate the venue, DJ, photographer and budget, and ensured the event ran smoothly.

That experience showed my ability to stay calm under pressure, solve problems quickly, and take responsibility when needed. I’m a strong communicator who works well in a team, while also being able to take initiative and lead when required.

I understand how important a strong social environment is at university, particularly in first year, and having really enjoyed it myself, I’d want to help create a fun and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

I would aim to organise inclusive and engaging social events such as quizzes, bingo, games nights, karaoke and themed events, alongside Freshers’ socials to help students meet each other, the committee and sports teams, and key events like the Welcome Ball and Law Ball. I would bring enthusiasm, commitment and a strong work ethic to the role.

Thank you for your time.

joanna.JPG

Joanna Gailey

I am applying for the role of social events manager because I would love to create experiences that bring people together and enhance student life beyond academics. The events will be well-planned, well-promoted and inclusive. I would achieve this through clear organisation, creativity and consistent energy to ensure that all members feel excited. Through my experience in many sports teams plus my part time job, I have been able to develop strong teamwork, time management and communication skills, showing I could work well with committee members to make sure the events are a success.

I have many plans for the committee next year. I would like to host more fresher events such as coffee meet ups or bingo nights, to offer people the opportunity to make friends and feel more comfortable at university. I would also like to host themed networking events such as a wine and cheese night to encourage increased attendance. I think it would be good to host smaller socials more frequently such as film nights, sip and paints, and pub quizzes with different themes. Well-being socials would also be important, such as group walks or runs. For an increase in cultural collaboration, the Holdsworth club could collaborate with cultural societies to host cultural dinners or performances. I would also be eager to organise a big BBQ at the end of the academic year. Overall, I would love to be social events manager, and I have many more ideas I hope to be able to organise.

Social Events Officer

alys.jpg

Alys Griffiths

Who am I?

My name is Alys and I believe my creativity and communication skills will be beneficial in organising social events tailored to everyone in the Holdsworth society. I am confident my rigidity and meticulous organisation makes me a perfect candidate for this role. Having attended many events myself this year and being part of the law netball team, I have effective insight into the nature of events the Holdsworth society values, in terms of celebrating its heritage alongside being a welcoming and friendly opportunity for members to network and make friends.

At my secondary school, I had a big role in organising charity events each year within my role as a prefect and house ambassador, being a transferrable skill in events planning and scheduling.

My Goals

As social events officer, I would endeavour to organise more socials during freshers week so that the society can gain more visibility, such as creating a larger presence at the freshers fair, a law pub golf, and having a sports teams event where the netball, football and hockey can integrate more closely and attract new players.

I would be particularly passionate in collaborating with the diversity officers in organising events with themes which engage with the vast cultures of the diverse student community - particularly for the Annual Law Ball theme.

I also think it would be important to host more casual events, such as library study groups or coffee dates. Adding a section to the Holdsworth website where members can join whatsapp or instagram group chats for opportunities to meet other people with similar interests would be beneficial in bringing the society together, as well as providing more opportunities for newer students to build friendships with less pressure.

Overall, while listening to student voices to create fun and sociable events, I’ll take pride in meeting deadlines and am efficient in planning and scheduling, which demonstrates my suitability for this role.

Publicity Manager

isabella morris.jpg

Isabella Morris

I am Isabella Morris, and I am applying for the role of publicity manager as I believe I can add a strong contribution to the Holdsworth club.  My aim is to ensure all of the content is engaging, consistent and reflects the current standard of the Holdsworth club. I will uphold the professional aspect, whilst also meeting the member’s expectations. I am committed to growing the club’s publicity platforms providing both visual and informational content.

Whilst I achieved an A* in Media A level, I also had the role of media prefect which developed my communication and leadership skills. Through Media A-level, I expanded on my digital creative skills, understanding different audiences, and ensuring the content is coherent. Currently, I am managing a website for a holiday home, where I have designed and created the content. I am constantly updating the website, making sure the information is accurate whilst also posting engaging content. I am a member of the Holdsworth netball team which has given me an understanding of the club’s core values and how the community engage with each other.

One of my ideas is to propose weekly themed Instagram posts where the members can actively engage. For example, it could be ‘Tips Tuesday’ whereby there could be a short reel on study suggestions or exam techniques. Additionally, I would consider a weekly ‘question and answer’ chat room on Instagram to receive feedback whilst understanding what the member’s would like to see within the club.

kirti.jpeg

Kirti Singh

I am excited to run for Publicity Manager for the Holdsworth Club. I believe I have both the experience and ideas to strengthen our social media presence. I want to take on this role because I have seen how important clear, engaging communication is in helping students make the most of opportunities, and I would love to make Holdsworth’s platform more accessible and interactive.

Experience:
Over the past year, I have been your Women in Law Publicity Officer and DLA Piper Ambassador, where I gained experience promoting events and creating content that resonates with students. Alongside this, my past role as a social media intern with an education consultancy and multiple NGOs has strengthened my ability to manage and respond to queries in a professional, timely, and thoughtful manner. I am also confident in using Canva and CapCut to produce high-quality, engaging content.

Ideas:
I understand that social media is the primary way Holdsworth connects with its members, and I want to ensure this communication is consistent, engaging, and responsive. I will build on the excellent content Holdsworth provides, while introducing:

  • An events calendar to ensure you never miss opportunities

  • Regular feedback through Q&A stories

  • Event highlights and recaps for those unable to attend

  • More interactive content to increase visibility so you don’t miss our posts

  • Continue with prompt, professional responses to direct messages

Through this, I aim to ensure Holdsworth’s social media is not just informative but also fosters a strong sense of community among its members

Publicity Officer

isballea shao.png

Isabella Shao

I am applying for the position of Publicity Officer for the Holdsworth Club because I believe I have the experience and excitement to be successful in this position. As a first-year LLB student originally from Canada, I have already seen how important this society is to the Birmingham Law School experience. My background is rooted in leadership and digital engagement; while at high school in Ontario, I served as president of several clubs, including the Student Uniform Association, DECA, and our school newspaper, The Franklin. These roles, combined with my experience managing our gold-medal-winning OFSAA soccer team, required me to take full ownership of publicity. I was responsible for designing posts, stories, and reels using Canva that kept my peers informed and excited about new events, a skillset I am eager to apply here. My vision for the committee is to continue the already fantastic legacy of the club; the Holdsworth Club already maintains a fantastic public image with great social presence, and my plan is to keep the current standard going by ensuring our social media remains active, professional, and high-energy. Having earned my PMI Project Management Ready certification and worked as a YMCA counselor, I am highly organized, responsible, and dedicated to meeting deadlines. I am committed to maintaining the high standards the current committee has set, ensuring every student stays connected to firm open days, socials, and career opportunities through clear and engaging communication.

Sports Officer

olivia lloyd.png

Olivia Lloyd

I would love to have the responsibility of being sports officer as I am a driven and hard-working individual with a genuine love for sports. This has stemmed from my commitment to various sports over the years, including dance, netball and gymnastics. Balancing these sports came with determination and time-management which reflects comfortably within this role as I will ensure all expectations of this role are upheld accordingly.

One of my main achievements within my sporting experience was captaining my previous netball team showing my leadership and organisation abilities. I will transfer these skills into the sports officer role when managing training facilities alongside scheduling matches and tournaments. My love for team sports reflects my strong communication and teamwork skills, enabling me to maintain a friendly and welcoming community that incorporates all abilities and newer members.

A further reason for my application is my recognition of the vital role sports plays in supporting mental, physical and social well-being. This is especially important for students, as it not only serves to improve fitness but also as an effective way to manage stress and anxiety at university.

If I was to receive this role, I would keep the sports aspect of the Holdsworth Club engaging and encouraging through arranging events from mixed teams’ charity tournaments to organised days where all three sports teams participate in friendly matches with other universities. One of my goals would be to promote sport in an exciting and competitive environment filled with drive, passion and enjoyment.

I strongly believe that sport plays a vital role in maintaining well-being and a healthy work-life balance, especially given the mental demands of studying law. As an international athlete on the TeamGB Olympic pathway through school and university, I understand how important physical activity and community are to balancing academic stress. International competition has allowed me to further develop discipline, resilience, time management, and teamwork - all essential skills for the role of Sports Officer. My experiences make me confident in my ability to handle key responsibilities of the role, including organising pitch bookings, competition planning, and managing events such as the annual Manchester tournament.

If elected, I would aim to broaden our events, organising charity matches and themed sports days for our teams. This would bring awareness and funds to important causes whilst maintaining an enjoyable environment, connecting students within the School and strengthening the Holdsworth Society’s campus presence. I will also work with the teams’ social secretaries to encourage the organisation of social events, such as days out, to strengthen team bonds. My involvement with the Holdsworth Netball team this year has highlighted this value of community within the Club’s sports teams, allowing me to develop relationships with people from across year groups, learning from their experiences; a trend I aim to promote with future cohorts through these events.

Overall, I am organised, approachable, and committed to increasing participation in sports within the society and, I believe, have the skills, experience, and passion to make this role a success.
